At ESB, data sits in the centre of our business, providing insights to support better business decisions. We are looking for a Data Engineering Manager to join our growing data analytics team. Key Responsibilities

Working within the CIO team, you will be part of a highly motivated and skilled team of data professionals working to achieve maximum value for our customers and all our investments across a range of technologies.

 You will lead the Data Engineering Team, responsible for our data analytics platforms and working closely with a group of data analysts and data scientists to solve business challenges. 

What you will do:

  • Design, architect and lead delivery of high quality, fully tested data engineering components leveraging multi-disciplinary teams such as Product Owners, Data Architects, Data Scientists, Data Analysts, Solution Designers & Developers
  • Input across all aspects of the analytics lifecycle and take a leadership role in overall product design, execution and delivery
  • Executes and has ownership for the delivery of the wider Data Engineering strategy for ESB as well as inputting to the overall data analytics strategy for ESB
  • Accountable for the design and implementation of models, capabilities and solutions to manage data across the organisation, including data models, storage requirements and migration of one system to another
  • Undertakes needs analysis to establish future team capability needs and evaluates the effectiveness and appropriateness of tools and methodologies to deliver against current and future needs
  • Stays abreast of internal and external developments to identify and implement best practice methodologies and emerging technologies, leading continuous improvement efforts
  • Leads the definition, maintenance and implementation of data engineering and data modelling standards
  • Communicate with the business to scope projects and gather requirements
  • Develop data engineering standards and drive best practice in areas including documentation, test plans and code management
  • Drive a culture of reuse and sharing of technology assets whilst delivering flexible and responsive solutions to a rapidly-moving market
  • Automation and standardisation of data extraction, transformation, loading (ETL), analysis, visualisation and deployment
  • Use a wide range of technologies, database management systems, Business Information reporting and visualisation software
  • Identifies and standardises the use and governance of data and analytics. Cascades data strategy into data governance to promote data access, quality, and analytical capability.
  • Actively contribute to improving operational efficiency on projects and internal initiatives, consistently driving projects to completion, ensuring that deadlines are met, and high-quality outputs are produced
  • Mentor develop and lead teams of diverse individuals. Experience of building analytics teams including hiring, mentoring and developing diverse individuals.
     
    If successful, you will report to the ESB Analytics Manager as well as indirectly to the Product or Project Manager of the project you are working on.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • At least 7+ years in analytics/data engineering, with 3+ years of managing and mentoring teams of data professionals.
  • Experience in maintaining large data warehouse systems.
  • Strong experience in working with data governance and data security teams and in moving data pipelines into production with appropriate data quality, governance and security standards and certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across multiple deployment environments including cloud, on-premises and hybrid, multiple operating systems
  • Knowledge of technologies such as HDFS, HIVE, Sqoop, Oozie, Spark or Sentry
  • Cloudera
  • Data modelling and data design concepts.
  • Strong Linux skills including BASH scripting.
  • Programming language(s): Java, SCALA or Python.
  • Proven critical thinking and analytical problem-solving with the ability to assimilate and apply new techniques and knowledge.
  • Proven track record of excellent stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience of software development lifecycle, including solution design, development and release management. (Agile/SCRUM)
  • Project Management skills with a proven ability to manage project delivery/product development and resources.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate proposed solutions, requirements and design effectively to developers, all levels of management, as well as partners.
  • Strong experience in working with data governance and data security teams and in moving data pipelines into production with appropriate data quality, governance and security standards and certification.
  • Ability to effectively drive business, culture, and technology change in a dynamic and complex operating environment
  • Ability to effectively coordinate, allocate, and manage resources and projects throughout multiple teams
  • Knowledge of trends and developments in the fields of data management and data analytics
  • Demonstrated ability to work across multiple deployment environments including cloud, on-premises and hybrid, multiple operating systems

      Essential

  • Excellent understanding of visualisation tools like Tableau, Power BI, Business Objects etc
  • Understanding of data warehouses, data marts and the Kimball methodology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and applied usage of various Microsoft Database, ETL and reporting technologies (SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS).
  • Understanding of data science tools like R / Python.
  • Understanding of cloud technology such as Microsoft Azure
  • Demonstrated experience with developing data strategy, policies, and procedures, as well as successfully executing programs that meet or exceed expectations in a dynamic environment; experience creating tools and capabilities to assist with data discovery & collaboration, ensure data quality, and to load, clean, enrich, manage, and share data and metadata from a variety of sources
  • To have an external focus and seek ways that ESB can continue to adapt and improve its use of Hadoop and data analytics in the broadest sense.
  • Agile development methodologies (Scrum, Kanban).
     
    Above all, you must be innovative in your approach and be able to demonstrate your ability to actively contribute to a team that delivers results. Knowledge of the electricity supply, transmission and generation business is not essential, but would be a distinct advantage. 

Qualifications

Third level qualification in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or equivalent working experience. Masters preferred 

Location

The position is primarily co-located in ESB Head Office, Dublin City Centre, and Electric Ireland Office, Santry (depending on projects assigned).
