On the 29th of September, we hosted a fantastic Munster Chapter event discussing data compliance & trustworthy AI with Professor Barry O'Sullivan at the Dean, Cork.
Barry O'Sullivan provided a thought-provoking and wide-ranging talk on the difficulties in regulating AI in any general sense.
We learned that what industry needs is greater vertical market segment regulation on the use of AI, perhaps even a hippocratic oath to do no harm for those that develop AI applications. EU legislation on general AI regulation has a difficult road ahead when even the definition of AI is not completely clear. 'That program is only a simple regression test your honour'!
Over a good hour+ session of talk and question & answer, the attendees were treated to an expert, practical assessment of the general topics around algorithmic bias, Frugal AI, the need for the industry to communicate about AI more positively, the inability of AI to display common-sense and a knowingness of the way the world works. Hence sentience is a very long way off. AI is still just a program that is automated and operationalised.
