Marco Foley, Re-Turn
When Ireland's Deposit Return Scheme launched in February 2024, Re-Turn had built an initial data platform against a fixed go-live date, thousands of new IoT-enabled RVMs, and a custom application processing millions of transactions.
That platform proved its value early, giving Re-Turn visibility of performance and enabling data-informed decisions. But as the scheme matured, so did the business requirements, the scale and sophistication of questions quickly outgrew what the original platform was designed to support. Re-Turn made a strategic decision to rebuild.
A key principle shaped the new design from day one: this would be a platform built to work with AI. That meant making data structures, standards, metadata, governance, security and engineering best practices foundational; not retrofitted. The result is a modern data foundation that supports today's reporting needs while enabling the next generation of capabilities: advanced analytics, automation, and AI-powered tools that can interact directly with Re-Turn's data.
