Data for Good -  Online Inspire Event

Join us for an inspiring online event where industry leaders reveal how they’re harnessing the power of data to make a difference in the world!

This one-of-a-kind gathering will feature speakers from diverse sectors who use data to drive positive change. Gain insights into real-world projects and learn how data is being transformed into a force for good.

Patricia Maguire, Professor of Biochemistry, Director, UCD Institute for Discovery

  • Patricia's pioneering work on the "platelet releasate," introduced in a landmark 2004 Blood paper, has been instrumental in advancing our understanding of platelet biology. Her research integrates machine learning and artificial intelligence to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, especially for inflammatory diseases such as preeclampsia, multiple sclerosis, and venous thromboembolism. This talk will discuss how she has combined omics with AI to create groundbreaking diagnostics like the multi-award winning AI_PREMie, recognised in the UNESCO Global Top 100 AI Projects for its application in preeclampsia risk stratification.

Dr. Dimitar Shterionov, Assistant professor at the Department of Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence (CSAI) at TiU

  • Automatic translation between signed and spoken languages is a very complex task which is addressed through sign language or speech recognition, natural language understanding, machine translation and sign language or speech synthesis. All these steps typically use data-driven AI models that require high volumes of quality data. But data for sign languages is scattered, scarce and not formatted for the needs of modern Deep Learning approaches. This talk will discuss sign language resources and the hurdles that researchers meet when working on sign language machine translation, highlighting experiences and lessons learned from the SignON project.

Gavin Kelly, Statistician, Central Statistics Office (CSO)

  • The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has a long-standing history of publishing independent statistics and insights about Irish society. This presentation will give an overview of the current operations of the CSO as well as the wide variety of services we provide. The presentation will highlight how the CSO continues to evolve in a rapidly changing data landscape through our collective use of administrative and survey data. Finally, the presentation will aim to provide insights into the quality framework and standards maintained in the CSO which enables us to provide independent insight for all.

Whether you're a data enthusiast or simply curious about impactful applications, this event will empower you to see data in a whole new light.

Don’t miss this opportunity to be inspired by stories of data-driven solutions for a better tomorrow!
