Data Visualisation: Essentials

The Data Visualisation Essentials workshop provides attendees with an inspiring introduction to the art and science of data visualisation. It is an art concerned with unleashing creativity and flair, designing data-driven communications that appeal on an aesthetic level and survive in the mind on an emotional one. It is a science aimed at understanding and exploiting the way people process communicated information most efficiently, effectively and accurately.
The workshop is structured around four distinct themes that collectively shape the key elements of this popular multi-disciplinary field. It is not a technical course built around tutorial-based instruction, rather it focuses on the value of embracing the craft of this subject shaped around a multitude of contextual, analytical, editorial, and creative design decisions.
This training is designed to be accessible, inspirational, and fun, but above all else it is intended to be useful, something participants leave feeling informed and motivated to apply what they’ve learned.
This courses will cover:
- Learning the key principles that distinguish the best data visualisation practices
- Knowing how to establish the influential context of your work: the who, where, when, what and, importantly, the why
- Appreciating the process of creating a visualisations to organise your thinking
- Determining what is relevant data - and relevant analysis of that data - to share with your audience
- Discovering a wide variety of different charting methods, with applied examples to demonstrate their roles, their pros, and their cons.
- Illuminating the many little details that lead to effective design choices, including the potential features of interactivity, the vital components of annotation, the effective employing of colour choices, and the layout decisions of composition.
- Profiling the contemporary visualisation technology landscape and resources for learning
- Enlightening through many different visualisation examples reflecting a wide range of techniques, topics, and styles
Delivery:
This workshop is delivered on a closed course basis only for organisations.
The delivery can be customised and includes a session with Andy in advance to tailor the content for your specific needs or challenges as an organisation.
This course is delivered live and can be delivered in-person/in a classroom environment or virtually,.
Cohort Size: Max 16 participants per cohort (can run multiple cohorts)
Time: 3 hour Delivery. Time Slots: 10 -1pm or 2-5pm
Who is it for?
This course is designed for and relevant to anybody who needs to communicate with data. Participants should have an instinct for and interest in sharing insights from data, as well as an appetite for embracing fresh approaches to communicating data. The best visualisers are curious, seeking answers to smart questions, looking at topics from creative angles.
Requirements:
There are no skill or knowledge pre-requisites for this course. All attendees receive digital copies of the teaching materials as well as exercise files and further useful resources. Attendees of either in-person or online sessions will need laptops to enable them to follow the materials and participate in the class activities.
There are no software requirements beyond having a modern browser and pdf reader.
