Hypothesis Testing: How to Ask Better Questions With Data

This masterclass provides a practical, intuitive introduction to hypothesis testing — one of the core foundations of statistical inference. You will learn how to frame questions formally using null and alternative hypotheses, understand the difference between one-tailed and two-tailed tests, and apply the right statistical methods using Python’s statsmodels package.

Through clear explanations and hands-on examples, we explore how to test assumptions, validate insights, and avoid common pitfalls when drawing conclusions from data.

Learning Outcomes
  • Understand hypothesis testing fundamentals: Learn how to construct null and alternative hypotheses and interpret p-values and significance levels

  • Apply one-tailed and two-tailed tests: Explore when each is appropriate and how to run them correctly in statsmodels.

  • Use statsmodels effectively: Perform t-tests, proportion tests, and simple regression-based inference with clear, reproducible Python code.

  • Develop analytical judgement: Learn how to avoid common misinterpretations and apply hypothesis testing to real business and analytical questions.

Target Audience

This masterclass is designed for analysts, quants, data scientists, and anyone who works with data and needs to test assumptions or validate insights. Some basic Python knowledge is helpful, but no prior statistics background is required — the session uses simple explanations and practical examples throughout.
