Think Before You Analyse

We like to think data keeps us objective, but the person doing the analysis is human. Our brains take shortcuts, and those same shortcuts shape how we read data and how we read people. This masterclass explores the psychology of how we jump to conclusions, and gives you simple ways to slow your thinking down at the moments that matter.

This masterclass will guide you through how common thinking traps show up in everyday work, from analysis that confirms what we expected to the assumptions we make about colleagues, and how to build the habit of challenging your own thinking. Along the way, you’ll put together a simple critical thinking checklist you can use on any piece of analysis, and on any assumption about the people you work with.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session, you'll walk away with a simple critical thinking checklist you can use on any piece of analysis, and on any assumption about the people you work with. Participants will be able to:

  • Understand How Your Brain Takes Shortcuts: Explore the psychology of fast and slow thinking, and the biases that creep into both analysis and everyday judgements.
  • Spot When You've Jumped to Conclusions: Learn a simple model for noticing when you've leapt from the facts to a conclusion, about numbers or about people.
  • Challenge Your Own Thinking: Pick up a practical checklist to test your assumptions and stay open to being wrong

Target Audience

This masterclass is designed for analysts, data professionals and anyone who draws conclusions from data, or relies on other people’s analysis to make decisions.
